Class B CDL

What Is A Class B CDL?

A Class B Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) is a specific category of CDL that authorizes the holder to operate certain types of commercial vehicles. With a Class B CDL, individuals are permitted to drive single vehicles with a gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) exceeding 26,000 pounds. This includes straight trucks, buses, box trucks, and other large vehicles, but not tractor-trailers or combination vehicles where the trailer has a GVWR over 10,000 pounds.

Common vehicles that may be operated with a Class B CDL include delivery trucks, dump trucks, school buses, and larger passenger buses. Like the Class A CDL, obtaining a Class B CDL usually requires specific training and testing to ensure drivers have the necessary skills and knowledge to operate these commercial vehicles safely. Depending on the specific job or type of cargo being transported, additional endorsements may be required, such as those for carrying hazardous materials or driving passenger vehicles.

Vehicles You May Be Able To Drive With A Class B CDL Include:

  • Straight trucks
  • Large passenger buses (with appropriate endorsements)
  • School buses
  • Box trucks
  • Dump trucks
  • Delivery trucks
  • Tow trucks (non-commercial)
  • Utility trucks
  • Cement mixers
  • Garbage trucks
  • Ambulances (with appropriate endorsements)
